When do they start with the thumbs?

My son just started being able to suck his thumb consciously and consistently (he is now awesomely quiet). He just turned three months old. Is this cause, yet, for proving my instinct that he's an utter genius? I mean I'll probably say that anyway, but what's the normal thumb-sucking-starter age?
