Iphone 3gs jailbreak?

hi know the new pwned thing came out but EVERY time i get the 1600 error and i know i'm doing it right ! I have a mac and i put it in DFU mode but it said sorry blah blah 1600 error could not work . But i have a question i phone 3gs i got it in aug. and i hacked it before and i upgraded it by misstake but does your iphone have to be jailbroken to be jailbreak to the new version ? I didn't edit it sorry im in a rush
